The Other Subject

There are two subjects that you should never talk about to anyone: politics and religion. For some reason the two are interchangeable in today’s verbal lingo. One touches on how the world will function and the other is how the world will function with morals placed in it. People vote depending on their religious beliefs as much as their political standpoint. Haven’t you heard a coworker or felt yourself that the current President is the “anti-christ”?

These subjects are in everything. A television show that emphasizes on abstinence or safe sex not only provides the population with options, but also displays a political and religious point of view depending on what some of the characters believe and say to one another and essentially spreading the message to an audience. The news show both religious and political moments in the stories featured. Even dating websites or just a conversation with a significant show a political and religious view.

My question is: Why is this so important? To me, it is important for someone to listen and just let me believe what I want. You can express your opinions, but ultimately, it is my life and my decision. When people say that God loves everyone, but gets angry when someone does not share the same beliefs, couldn’t that be considered hypocritical? I believe that the merging of politics and religion has always been a part of each other, however people try to separate the two. It is impossible to.

My own religious beliefs and political views go hand in hand. I am not liberal nor am I conservative. I am not agnostic, an atheist, monotheist, or polytheist. I believe that religion is not about facts or the who’s who of the ancient world, it is pure faith. Faith in the emotional sense. The type of emotion that cannot be explained. It is likened to being in love or the feeling you get when your conscience takes control. Politics, on the other hand, is about facts. This is where you pay attention to the who’s who and what th person stands for.

Yes, the emotion is important to any individual and if you are looking for someone who understands you, I would say that religion is most likely a factor. However, to say that you are voting for one person over another because of religious views is plain silly. You aren’t marrying the President. You are placing the country’s needs in his hands.

My point is this: if you are going to have an intelligent conversation with someone about beliefs then, don’t say the facts. Say the emotional value. If you are going to talk about the politics or the weather, that’s when the facts are important.

  1. I always thought the Christ advocated for a quieter sort of Faith, in the way he presented things. “Judge Not, Be Judged Not” “Love thy enemy” “You cannot know God”, all seemed to me to be speaking to the idea that we really don’t have the right to dictate to others.
