Book Review: The Perfect Luna by Marissa Gilbert

Riannon stood in the middle of her living room, watching her husband of six years, Brayden, introducing his true mate, Roxy, to their pack members. Although he insisted that little cute Omega was there only to appease his wolf and would not affect their marriage, Ria knew the sad truth. In less than a year, Roxanne would destroy everything she loved and cherished. Being the perfect Luna was simply not enough for her beloved husband when his mate bond kicked in. Just like their divorce was not enough for the vicious Omega. Right before her own Luna crowning ceremony, Roxy ordered to brutally kill Riannon and everyone who was still loyal to her. However, the Moon Goddess had other plans, and Ria was returned to the precise moment her life turned upside down with a chance to change everything—the chance she was not going to waste.

Her revenge was going so well, but Ria did not expect the changes she made to create a chain reaction, unlocking events that never happened before. Thanks to that, she soon discovers her own true mate—the Lycan King. And that’s when her story truly begins.

The Perfect Luna is an award-winning book first published in 2021. It’s perfect for anyone who loves a gripping revenge story with unexpected plot twists, a love to die for, humour mixed with heartbreaks and steamy romance.
The physical copy of this book was published on Amazon in December 2023.

I first came across The Perfect Luna through the Dreame app. For those who don’t know Dreame, it is a reading app specializing in stories written in serial form. Serials are short chapters that often end in cliffhangers. The reader eventually pays to read each chapter after a set amount has been read. I had tried this app before, and, to be honest, some of the fiction is . . . well, dramatic is the best way to put it. Think soap operas with teens as the main leads and not really the best writing.

Now, I’m not one to take editing into stock when it comes to grammatical or punctuation errors. Developmental editing, though? That’s a bit important. That’s the structure of the story and how it all fits. Unfortunately, that has been my experience with some of the fiction in apps like Dreame.

However, The Perfect Luna surpassed that expectation. I got my soap opera-like drama, some interesting plot choices I usually see in webcomics, and a story that made sense for the characters. I was so impressed that I spent money on the app, decided to buy the book outright, and then followed the author.

What are the interesting plot choices? There is a time travel element that I generally only see in webcomics. There are a few webcomics from China and Korea (and I’m sure other countries as well) where the female lead dies and travels back in time to a pivotal event that, if a different choice was made, they’d be alive and thriving. In The Perfect Luna, our strong, independent queen, Riannon, experiences this.

It was a plot choice I wasn’t expecting, and it hooked me fast. Riannon instantly became a favorite character. Despite the marriage troubles she is going through and has gone through already (in death time travel motifs, the main character often remembers their past life), she stands tall and doesn’t lose her cool. She is often considered perfect, but she isn’t. Not really. She is defiant and loyal and learns from the mistakes she made in the past.

It felt like a “If I were to go back in time” fantasy that fulfilled my inner strong woman. Because let’s face it, every person feels that way. Especially when you find out you were in a relationship that wasn’t fulfilling and helping you grow. You wish you had done things differently with the wisdom you learned from that event.

Reading The Perfect Luna taught me to do my best and to trust myself. I also learned how to emulate the cool that Riannon possesses so beautifully in many scenes.

Now, aside from the amazing main character, we have a strong male lead who has his Alpha male moments but is willing to let Riannon be the woman that she is. He isn’t controlling but assertive and supports her. It’s also nice that he’s a sexy man.

There’s so much more I could say about this book, but I think it’d be best if you read it yourself. Luckily, it’s available on Dreame, Amazon, and Inkitt. It’s definitely a read for the drama-loving, canine-adoring reader.
