Crispin Nottingham. Abandoned by Crispin and pursued by the Puritans, he finds
he must harness the wind to assist his escape and flee his homeland aboard a

I received a copy of Witch in the Wind in exchange for an honest review. What follows is my opinion and mine alone. There was no compensation for this review.
Witch in the Wind is a historical fantasy set just after the notorious Salem Witch Trials. And by “just”, I mean there is some overlapping, but the bulk of the book is after the trials. It is a coming of age-esque book about a young man who finds his sexuality and fights for his freedom.
I don’t know why, but I definitely kept thinking of Joe Locke as the visual aid for Alexander, our main character. It might be because of Agatha All Along, but it’s a great mental image while reading.
As a character, Alexander was meh in the beginning. It wasn’t until around chapter four and five that his personality started to get rolling. His need for freedom was there in the writing, but it wasn’t until then I really felt it.
Before then, Alexander felt more … I don’t want to say selfish because that’s not correct, but he was brazen in his actions and seemed to lack self-preservation skills. On one hand, it’s a great model for people to be unabashedly themselves, but on the other hand, I felt he wasn’t smart in his actions. That said, he was a teenager going through hormones, magic making, and grief. It just took me a bit of time to not go into big sister mode.
I say big sister mode because I would definitely have smacked him on the head and told him to be smarter in his actions had we been siblings. I did that all the time with my siblings.
The book really hits once we hit that 15-20% mark. And you are going to be reading like a madman. The imagery is good and Damian Serbu’s writing style is easy to get into. I often struggle with historical-esque settings, but Serbu crafts the time period, adds that magic, and keeps my attention. All are a win in my book.
As I said before Agatha All Along popped in my head as I was reading this. Not because it is just like the show. It isn’t. Nope, it’s all because we have that magic and LGBT representation. And the vibe whenever the magic appears.
If you love LGBT representation, magic, and pirates, grab this book. It’s a fun read for the spooky season for those wanting a bit of magic, love, and being unapologetically yourself.

The review sounds like a good book.
