I received a copy for an honest review. What follows is my opinion and mine alone.
The Compassionate Writer is a must-have for every writer. No joke. It is one of those writing instruction books where every section addresses something a writer might be dealing with. Do you have writer’s block due to imposter syndrome? Are you experiencing flat characters with no human traits? READ THIS BOOK.
Imposter syndrome is one of those things that every writer experiences and will never get away from. Lately, it’s been my companion whenever I pick up a notebook to begin writing. It’s why my current cozy mystery was lacking. But after reading The Compassionate Writer, I was reminded not to be hard on myself.
The book includes exercises and writing prompts that put you in different emotional spaces, helping shape your narrative style to reflect real life. You want characters or your own narrative to show the story’s humanity. And this book helps with that.
It is a book that fits perfectly with my other writing books, and it isn’t going anywhere.
Meet the Author:
Anne E. Beall, Ph.D., is an award-winning author and social psychologist who writes about the emotional undercurrents that shape our lives. Her writing explores the psychology of relationships—between lovers, family members, friends, and pets who think they’re in charge.
She’s written eight nonfiction books, including Cinderella Didn’t Live Happily Ever After and Only Prince Charming Gets to Break the Rules, which reveal the hidden messages inside classic fairy tales. She has been featured in People Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, Toronto Sun, NPR, NBC, and WGN.
Anne is the founder and editor of Chicago Story Press Literary Journal, which publishes true stories that invite readers to see something in a new light. She holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from Yale—so yes, she can absolutely over analyze your childhood.
She lives in Chicago, where she writes, edits, walks a lot, and tries to convince other people that winter isn’t really that long in the Midwest.
I received a copy of The Compassionate Writer for an honest review. What follows is my opinion and mine alone.
The Compassionate Writer is one of those writing books every author needs. There, I’ve said it. If you are an aspiring author, a published author, or even just a writer, you NEED this book. Not only do you get writing exercises, but you get a book that tells you it’s okay that you aren’t writing every day. It’s okay that you write under a different drumbeat. Hey, it’s even okay to take a step back and look at your story. All that matters is that you look at yourself and the world you’re writing with compassion.
As a writer, you need to have compassion for the characters you write in order to make them more real. You need compassion for yourself because that imposter syndrome is real. In truth, compassion isn’t just needed in order to be a good human being. It’s needed to be a good writer.
For this year, I’m practicing self-compassion. I beat myself up a lot over my own writing to the point that it’s difficult for me to even advertise. I love my stories, and they are worth being out in the world, but it is difficult to look at myself as worthy of being out there with them. Though this book didn’t really address the marketing or publishing aspects of being a writer, it helped with the core issue: that I often feel like I’m not an author.
But, I am. I am a small indie author with a small readership, but I want to find more people who will enjoy my work. I want to write more rounded characters and hit people in the feels. The Compassionate Writer helps make that happen, and it could help you.
For the writer in you, get this book. You’ll thank Dr. Beall.
