You know that teen movie that makes you smile, yell at the main characters, and sing along? You know the kind I’m talking about. They tug at the heartstrings while strumming the guitar strings. It’s the type of movie that has a great soundtrack and has you putting on the captions so you can sing along.
I’m not talking about High School Musical or Band Camp here. I’m talking about Jessica Pennington’s Love Songs & Other Lies.
This is one of those contemporary feel-good books that makes me want a movie adaptation. And I don’t usually ask for that in contemporary books. It has love gained, lost, forgiven, and music. Even though I don’t know the music with the lyrics, I found myself hearing something in my head. Maybe it was me wanting a soundtrack.
Either way, the book is about teen loves, Vee Miller and Cameron Fuller. Vee is a girl with a plan. If something doesn’t follow her plan, she freaks. The only thing her family asks her to do is live. Cameron is a boy who lost everything. He only wants to hide and disappear, but he finds living possible in Vee.
I found myself turning the pages quickly and though I’m not a huge contemporary fan, I am a fan of this book. I definitely have a few people in my head who would love this book and I definitely recommend it for readers. Now, all I’m left to do is wait for the news of movie rights, a movie, and the soundtrack.
I will probably buy the soundtrack in a heartbeat.

Jessica Pennington is no stranger to the combination of love and drama. She’s a wedding planner, after all. A writer since the age of ten—when she sought publication for her poem about a tree—Jessica likes the challenge of finding the humor in a sad situation or highlighting the awkwardness in a romantic one. She lives in a Michigan beach town suspiciously similar to the one in her novel, with her husband Josh and their son, Rory. Love Songs & Other Lies is her debut novel.
