When Sandy Lipton and her unborn child disappeared, the court of public opinion found young Chris Matheson guilty. Decades later, the retired FBI agent returns home to discover that the cloud of suspicion cast over him and his family has never lifted.
With the help of a team of fellow retired law enforcement officers, each a specialist in their own field of investigation, Chris Matheson starts chipping away at the ice on this cold case to uncover what had happened to Sandy and her baby and the clues are getting hot!
Ice is the first in a mystery series by Lauren Carr. Set in the same world as her Thorny Rose and Mac Faraday series’, the reader follows a retired FBI agent now living with his mother in a West Virginia farm.
This isn’t the first Lauren Carr book I’ve read/listened to and it’s definitely not the last. The fun thing about Carr’s books are the quirky characters and animal sidekicks. It’s something I enjoy and helps if the mystery ever feels just a bit much. For Ice, the mystery was great.
There was so much going on, but the way everything tied together was interesting and fun. The Geezer Squad, the book club of retired sleuths Matheson joins, are fun and have great personalities. It felt like a TV show you would see in the same docket of Leverage.
Out of the four audiobooks I’ve listened so far in the series, Ice is my second favorite. It’s a perfect first book, introducing the characters and pulling enough strings to hold the reader. No joke, I listened the whole way through in two days. Perfect for those long road trips.
