I received a copy of Mortal Weather in exchange for an honest review. What follows is my opinion and mine alone. There was no compensation for this review.

There is so much I could say about this book that it’s difficult to pinpoint on one thing. The prose is almost spiritual in the way it’s written, but isn’t overwhelmed with big flowery language. It was easy to get into, but isn’t what I would consider a single sitting read. Especially if you are undergoing the grief process yourself. I happen to be one of those people and had to set aside the book, mull over what I’ve read, take a walk, hug my dog, and go back to the text.

Which is probably the best way to approach this book.

At its heart, Mortal Weather is about grief and living in that space. It’s about the constant dance life and death have. All of which is orbiting around our protagonist, Stan.

In the start of the book, we learn about Stan’s wife, Eva. We see how his life revolves around her death. It isn’t until a pivotal event for him that he decides to try something new. All the while still trying to reconcile all his emotions.

I’m not Stan but I understand that constant thinking of your passed loved one. Stan lost his wife. I lost my father. On my birthday no less. Yesterday was his birthday. And he is on my mind daily.

I can’t quite describe how this book impacted me because I believe it might be different for someone else. I seemed to zero in on the more spiritual and grief aspect but someone else might find another thing to focus on. That said, I enjoyed it.

Mortal Weather is a well written book that holds you, comforts you, and gives you alternate views on how life and death work. All the while following Stan as he finds life again.

  1. Hello Cassia, This is a helpful review. I agree, it pulls out whatever emotion you are feeling at the time. I’m sorry about your dad. Mine passed as well, and I did think about him while I read this book. I felt the sadness, but also the hopefulness, too. And then I go and hug my dogs.
