East Berlin, 1990
The elegant woman with the grim expression was nearly seventy, but looked fifty-five. She was deep into the age of invisibility for women. Men no longer made note of her entering or leaving a place, and much as that rankled a once-beautiful woman’s psyche, she was counting on it now.
She steeled herself and crossed the entrance of the huge complex that had been the East Berlin headquarters of the dreaded STASI secret police for three decades. The hair rose on her forearms and a chill stiffened her spine, despite her determination and the fact that the beasts had been put down.
The Wall had fallen. The outraged East German people would now ransack the files that had held them hostage. Thirty years of terror didn’t die easy. Recordings, photographs, dossiers, collected from frightened neighbors and children coerced into betraying their own parents. STASI files were impeccable. Body swabs and blood samples had been kept in sealed containers so dogs could hunt humans.
Thousands would storm the hated headquarters now, desperate to destroy the data that had kept them powerless. She was only precious hours ahead of the hordes because of all the money that had changed hands so swiftly; the predators so ready to pounce, the oppressed so ready for vengeance. Without makeup, in nondescript jeans and an ancient black turtleneck, her memorable bosom flattened by a sports bra, her once-glorious hair now more pewter than gold, wound tight around her head like an aged Heidi—she would not be recognized. She intended to destroy what memories remained in this godforsaken place, not make new ones.
Her benefactor had paid unscrupulous people an outrageous sum so she could get these files. Everything in East Berlin was now for sale. Including her own past. The squirrel-faced quisling who’d been bribed handed over the file containing the names of her betrayers without comment. She opened the folder to see the face of the torturer. Bile rose in her throat as she fought to breathe. To remember. To forget.
She slipped the grim documents into the bag slung over her shoulder, next to the small Beretta.
